There are a lot of different definitions of globalization, but all of them stress greater movement of people, goods, capital and ideas due to increased economic integration – a tendency towards living in a borderless world. Of course, there has always been a sharing of products, services, knowledge and cultures between people and countries, but in recent years, because of the technological improvement and reduction of barriers, the speed of exchange has increased and enabled a freer circulation.

If we talk about globalization it concerns various aspects, not only economy but also politics, culture and even law.

Free Trade Organisations

Moreover the opportunity to create new markets and wealth appears. But there definitely are negative effects. Globalization can bring about disorder and suffering. Recent crisis has already unfolded some of the dangers of the global economy; on the other hand, it has also given the opportunity to initiate changes and improvements.

Some of the trade agreements which have facilitated international trade are for example FTAA, NAFTA and CAFTA. FTAA or Free Trade Area of the Americas proposed to reduce trade barriers among all countries in both North and South America except for Cuba. It works as an extension to NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) which discussed free trade among Canada, Mexico and the United States. Similarly to that agreement, Central American countries have their agreement as well, called Central America Free Trade Agreement. But there are definitely many more such organisations. At present there are more than thirty countries which joined the membership of the Free Trade Area of the Americas and it certainly shows that countries see their future in cooperation and partnership even though critics say that the process of globalization tends to harm the development of poor countries.

Transnational Corporations

Another controversial issue are transnational corporations which in some countries have higher annual profit than the GDPs of low or medium income countries are. On account of these corporations, the power and influence of national governments have dropped. And it can even seem that politics in some parts of the world is market-driven.

De-localization

New developments have also shown great changes in de-localizations. People have to deal with distant systems more and more which means that there is less face-to-face interaction and people frequently communicate with call centre workers who are miles away from them or even abroad, alternatively they just communicate via internet if they want to know details about their products or services. The only person you see and talk to is then somebody from the delivery company.

Technology and Opportunities

On the contrary, globalization has given the opportunity for the development of technology, science and knowledge. Innovations like the internet gave access to information and resources all around the world. This tendency is sometimes also called “knowledge economy” as it enables quick employment of new technologies and circulation of knowledge and ideas.

Summary

Quite significantly, it can be seen that globalization has both positive and negative sides. Among the negatives is mainly a widened gap between rich and poor countries, a threat of outsourcing and searching for cheaper labour, a threat of corporate ruling the world and a threat of loss of cultural identity. And among the positives is the spread of information knowledge and development of not only technology and better access to products and services. Also, companies care more about ecological problems all around the world and in general, people have become more open and tolerant towards each other.
