Concerning management styles, there are many various categories and classifications. But in general, there are four management styles that repeat: Autocratic, Democratic, Paternalistic and Laissez-faire.
Autocratic Management Style
Autocratic management style can be described as a top-down communication model. It was very popular mainly in the past when leaders and managers made decisions only at the top. When this management style is applied, employees are dependent on the leader and they can be characterised as pure followers who don´t form their own ideas or thoughts. Consequently it means that final decisions are made without taking employees´ input into consideration.
This management style can be likened to an idea of a country led by a king or dictator. The advantage of this style is that it ensures continuity and customers are able to get the same products all over the world and they can be certain that the ingredients or the process of product development is the same everywhere.
Democratic Management Style
Democratic management style is based on full employee consultation and feedback. Managers are always aware of what their employees exactly need before they make their final decision. This style is drafted from the government system of the United States. There are also several leaders who listen to their employees and then they are able to make their decisions on individual organisational levels the same as individual states and towns in the United States can create their own laws and regulations. Thus efficiency of the style is the joint operation as individual leaders or experts are able to treat the problem from a different perspective and then together with other leaders to come up with the best solution.
Paternalistic Management Style
Paternalistic management style works as a balance between a top down decision making and maximizing the welfare needs of employees. Even though managers make decisions on their own, they internally think about their employees’ personal needs. On the other hand, the same as with the autocratic management styles, employees are totally dependent on their leader regardless the opportunity to express their ideas and thoughts.
Laissez-faire Management Style
The main characteristic of the laissez-fair management style is delegation. And there are two advantages of this, leaders reduce their workload by delegating tasks and employees feel motivated when they are in complete control and have responsibility for the whole project. Leaders´ responsibility is then to monitor activities and work of their employees. They basically function as mentors and stimulators for their employees.
But there are certain conditions that need to be fulfilled in order to make this management style work. The leader must be able to communicate a strong vision of the company and have really broad expertise in order to help, stimulate and encourage various ideas of their employees. Additionally, the team must be composed of highly professional and creative groups of employees who are able to stick to this vision and feel commitment to their work.
